Farmers’ Story

Sajeda Begum, a simple housewife of Haria, Jessore, saw her life taking an abrupt turn a decade ago. She had to involve herself with the farming of flower after her husband had faced a terrible road accident, making him permanently disabled.

Hafiza is a nursery owner. She has been in flower trade for the last 13 years in Panisara village of Jhikaorgacha in Jessore, Bangladesh. Hafiza used to produce flower seedlings in her 66 decimals of land following traditional methods. She prefers produce seedlings of some selected varieties like marigold, salvia, calendula, petunia, star and some others as these have good market demand.

Saiful Islam (32) has been in flower cultivation for the last 10 years in Nilkontho village in Jhikorgasa Upazila of Jessore District. He used to cultivate food crops mainly inherited from his father Shamsul Islam, who was mainly a vegetable farmer. Saiful switched to flowers farming having observed that his neighboring farmers were making more bucks than he gets.

Ms. Shahanara Begum is a flower farmer in Haria village, Jessore, and her husband is a tailor. She has been growing Gerbera and Gladiolus variety flowers, but has very limited knowledge and information from her neighborhood on flower cultivation. Left to her own devices, Ms. Begum sprayed pesticides once every 15 days for a total cost of BDT 800 in each sprayexpression of love, joy, friendship & admiration, at your doorstep.
